La Salle Academy, the largest private school in Rhode Island, features a 45,000 square foot science and technology wing which was completed in 2004. The structure houses 11 science classrooms/labs for biology, chemistry and physics, as well as a lecture hall, 450-seat cafeteria, ministry center, bookstore and offices. Classrooms feature smartboards and modern laboratory equipment.

Constructed adjacent to existing classroom facilities, the building features a two-story pedestrian bridge spanning from the second and third floors into the existing structure. Preconstruction efforts on the facility included a focus on value engineering to achieve La Salle’s strict budget goals. The facility was constructed in 12 months.

Squash Courts
Exeter, NH
Construction Management

Phillips Exeter Academy engaged Gilbane to provide construction management for a 34,450 square foot addition for the Academy's new Squash Courts Complex. The project involved the demolition of 7 existing squash courts and the construction of 10 new courts that comply with the World Squash Federation's Standard Specifications. The squash courts were constructed as an addition to Exeter's existing athletic facility, which remained in full operation throughout the project. Much of the work was completed during the summer months, a peak-use time for the athletic facility due to the many summer sports camps and activities hosted by Phillips Exeter. The project was challenged by a fast track schedule, with only nine months from start to completion.

Construction Management

Portsmouth Abbey retained Gilbane to manage construction during renovation of office space, locker rooms, mezzanine and its kitchen and servery. Additional renovations throughout the facility included installation of all new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, new boys and girls lavatories and improvements to adjoining areas.

The central element of the project was the kitchen. The project required demolition of the existing kitchen and servery while maintaining services to adjacent buildings. A temporary kitchen and servery had to be established during construction so that students’ food service would not be disrupted.

New kitchen equipment included coolers, freezers, ovens, refrigerators, heated and cooled servery counters, and state-of-the-art kitchen hoods. Finishes included stainless steel, slate flooring and ceramic tile.
