Construction management services are being provided by Gilbane for the McCracken Power Plant emissions compliance project on the campus of The Ohio State University. The $73 million project includes the planning, programming, design, demolition, and construction to upgrade the central power plant by providing new boilers, updated systems, and new electrical distribution equipment in order to serve the energy needs of the entire campus.

Gilbane provided construction management services to the University of Kentucky for a new, $60 million facility for research and graduate education in biological chemistry, genetics, molecular and cellular biology, neuroscience and related fields.

The multi-disciplinary, five-story, 185,000-square-foot building features wet laboratories with required support spaces and facilities, workstations for laboratory technical staffs, office for investigators, break areas, corridors, and elevators. In addition, shared equipment rooms, such as animal care areas, central autoclave facilities, centrifuge facilities, cold rooms, tissue and cell culture facilities are included to serve all researchers in the building.

Gilbane served as the construction manager for a new building that houses two major innovative research programs at Case Western Reserve University. The project encompasses 18,800 square feet of new construction on the recently cleared section of campus called the West Quad (the former site of the Mt. Sinai Medical Center). The new building accommodates research for the Cleveland Center for Structural Biology (CCSB) and the Wright Fuel Cell Group (WFCG). Construction costs for the facility total $6.2 million.

Gilbane served as the construction manager for the Max M. Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University. The $75 million, five-building complex spans 5.5 acres and includes 369,907 square feet of facilities.

The College of Business campus includes a 10-story faculty building, a four-story graduate/career building, a four–story undergraduate building, 1,000-seat lecture hall, business library, computer center, and a four-story executive education center.

Gilbane served as construction manager for one of Northeast Ohio's most well-known children's hospitals, Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron.  This project included two, new additions and renovations to the existing building complex totaling 189,657 square feet and 84 patient beds.

The north addition is home to a burn center, a pediatric intensive care unit, and hematology/oncology areas.  A heliport was constructed on the roof of the new addition with an enclosed walkway to transport patients.  The first two levels contain mechanical and electrical spaces, a new loading dock and material handling area, and emergency generators.  The east addition includes a kitchen, food preparation areas, dining rooms, and an expansion for surgery and support areas.

This new, two-story preventive health and cardiac center was designed and built on a fast-track schedule of 15 months. Gilbane served as construction manager for this 115,000-square-foot facility which includes diagnostics, exam rooms, cardiovascular resistance training, weight/aerobic training, classrooms, lap and therapy pools, racquetball and basketball courts, indoor running track, cafeteria, and conference room.

A one-of-a-kind facility offering a healthy combination of preventative and rehabilitative programs, this center was constructed with a speed-to-market mentality and a strong focus on the needs of the owner.

Mark H. Zangmeister Cancer Treatment Center, Columbus, OH

The Mark H. Zangmeister Cancer Treatment Center is a new, 110,000-square-foot facility that will include comprehensive patient care from diagnosis to treatment in a healing environment.  The facility includes an 18-physician oncology clinic, a state-of-the-art imaging center including CTs, PET, and linear accelerators, a radiation oncology center, and a 90-chair infusion center.  Also available to patients and families are a full-service pharmacy and lab, patient education library with research staff, and a staff of social workers.

With existing wetlands on the site, the building will be designed to accommodate the environmental issues.  Additionally, the facility will integrate all of the services needed for a full-scale cancer center while providing patients with an intimate experience.

Gilbane served as construction manager for a new, five-story, 227,000-square-foot, stand-alone specialty heart hospital.  The facility includes 90 universal patient rooms; six oversized operating rooms; six cardiac catheterization/intervention rooms; MRI areas; a diagnostic area; and clinic space.  A 1,000-car parking garage with connector bridge was constructed just south of the hospital.

Gilbane provided construction management services for a new, $14 million armory for the Woodlawn Ohio National Guard.  The 112,000-square-foot armory includes a drill floor, offices, supply room, arms room with vault, day room, mess unit and servery, and vehicle storage/maintenance facilities.  In addition, the building is connected to the community recreation center and branch library.  The 17,000-square-foot recreation center contains two basketball courts with locker room facilities.

This $84 million, 20,000-seat, triple concourse arena is one of the largest intercollegiate arenas in the country. The 575,000-square-foot building will house basketball games, ice hockey, concerts and serve as a multi-purpose facility for students and faculty. The poured-in-place concrete structure features steel roof trusses, masonry and pre-finished metal panels, and award-winning terrazzo floors depicting athletes in action.

Gilbane is currently providing construction management services for a new, 135,000-square-foot recreation center for Cleveland State University (CSU).  The $26 million facility, designed by Sasaki Associates and Weber Murphy Fox, is located in downtown Cleveland and includes a 19,000 square feet of fitness/weight room areas, three basketball courts, two racquetball courts and squash courts, a 1/10-mile running track, juice bar, and administrative areas.

CSU is seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver certification for the recreation center.  Construction included the demolition of a 30,000-square-foot geodesic dome and as part of the LEED process, aluminum connecting members of the dome were recycled.  Also, provisions will be made for a pedestrian bridge which will connect the facility to a 400-car parking garage.

Gilbane is currently providing joint venture construction management services for the $258 million expansion and renovation of The Cleveland Museum of Art. Milestone one will total 588,000 square feet and will be constructed in five phases. It will include demolition of existing facilities, a new underground entrance, atrium lobby, 125,000 square feet of galleries and public spaces, new offices for museum staff, modifications to parking facilities, a complete upgrade of all building mechanical and electrical systems, and a central utility plant. Milestone one is scheduled for completion in 2007.

A 34,000-square-foot, glass-enclosed ‘piazza’ is jewel of the Rafael Vinoly signature design and will be constructed in milestone two. This atrium, modeled after the streets of Venice, Italy, includes a 70-foot-high skylight and will feature a restaurant and café, gift shop, and will be the primary location for special museum programming.

Gilbane recently provided construction management services for the Shafran Planetarium at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History.  The facility has become an education landmark in Cleveland and is one of the best-equipped and most compelling facilities of its size in the world.  One of the many unique features inside the planetarium is the Zeiss Skymaster ZKP3/S projector, created specifically for the museum.  The projector displays the positions of more than 5,000 stars, nebulae, galaxies, and planets.

A new exhibit hall features interactive displays that explain astronomy basics, such as how much you would weigh on other planets and what causes the phases of the moon.  The planetarium’s outer surface and roof are covered with 500 copper-colored, titanium-coated, stainless steel plates with the center of each panel penetrated by a fiber-optic cable to produce a star-like effect on the exterior.

New, six-level, 94,000-square-foot museum and education center honoring the great heavyweight boxer, Muhammad Ali.  This museum serves as an education center preserving and sharing the legacy and ideals of Ali.  Unique design characteristics include a three-dimensional, three-story, circular torch symbolizing an emotional and touching image of Ali lighting the torch at the 1996 Olympics.  The "rain screen" exterior design uses a series of colored ceramic tiles that, when seen from afar, suggest a montage of images of Ali.
 
Other amenities include a 160-seat auditorium, education classrooms, distance learning facilities for public and education programming, and an archival library.  A multi-purpose room is located on the building’s top level for private parties and receptions with a panoramic view of the Ohio River.

Danville Local School District

Serving as construction manager for Danville Local School District, Gilbane recently completed a one-story, 17,000-square-foot renovation project which houses grades K-8 and a two-story, 52,000-square-foot addition to the existing elementary school.

Not only was this project successful from a cost and schedule standpoint, but the district was an active participant in student involvement activities as well.

Gilbane successfully conquered a challenging site when serving as construction manager for Rock Hill Local School District's new elementary, new high school, and renovations/addition to the existing middle school totaling 347,000 square feet.  Located in Southern Ohio, Rock Hill's project site required over 100 dynamite blasts to loosen dirt and rocks and over one million cubic yards of dirt had to be cleared prior to construction.

Despite the cost impact of enormous site issues, the project was successfully completed on time and on budget.

Minford Local School District was one of the first district's to receive funding for new facilities under the Ohio School Facilities Commission's initiatives. Gilbane served as construction manager for a new, two-story, 99,000-square-foot high school, a new and renovated two-story, 74,000-square-foot elementary school, and a 144,000-square-foot middle school.

Gilbane also assisted the district to plan for future expansion, parking, and site utilization.

Gilbane is currently providing construction management services to build a new educational complex for Galion City School District.  Included in the scope are a new elementary school to house grades PK-2; new elementary school to house grades 3-5; new middle school to house grades 6-8; and new high school for grades 9-12.  The project totals more than 312,000 square feet of new construction and all four facilities are located on a single campus totaling 40 acres.

Gilbane provided construction management services for the construction of a new, three-story office building built atop a new, five-story parking garage in downtown Columbus, Ohio. The new, 560,336-square-foot facility contains a 100-foot atrium featuring two interior waterfalls. Also included is an employees fitness center and a new, fully equipped childcare facility with a partially enclosed playground.

Gilbane was responsible for overseeing the construction of various projects at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The S40 Program at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport included rebuilding a number of test facilities and relocating the equipment from those facilities. The Preliminary Engineering Report project encompassed relocating the Small Scale Multi-Purpose Research Facility (SMiRF), a maintenance storage facility, and two test buildings.

Other relocations included an Altitude Combustion Stand research building, installing a stairway and truss system, and relocating the B-Stand testing facility to another site. Gilbane was also responsible for a number of work orders, estimating, and construction management services.

An attempt to better serve its membership base of 270,000 led the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System to expand its facilities. The $91 million, 270,000-square-foot project consisted of a new, mid-block, 12-story office tower, a three-story daycare center, and a seven-level, 600-car parking garage.

The Gilbane project team adopted a good neighbor policy for the tight construction site. In one location, the building is only two inches from the property line. This project helped lead the revitalization efforts in the Discovery District of downtown Columbus, Ohio.

Dating back to 1906, Memorial Hall was originally intended to honor the veterans of the Civil War, and until recently housed Columbus' Center of Science and Industry (COSI).  Upon completion, the county relocated 18 county agencies to this newly renovated, 110,000-square-foot, three-story building.

Many of the original elements were restored including the monumental staircase at the entrance of the building and two murals depicting civil war and naval battle scenes.  Other unique aspects include a repainted 40-foot high barrel vaulted ceiling, 2,800-square-foot greek key designed terrazzo floor, and ornate marble wall panels.

Gilbane provided construction management services for the new, five-story business service center located in the prestigious Easton development area. The 464,000-square-foot facility includes a 40,000-square-foot data center for check processing, direct banking, data processing, consumer lending, task management, and item processing. Two, one-story parking structures were also constructed.

Gilbane seamlessly relocated 1,500 employees from two bank locations into this new center. This 24/7 center now serves as the backbone of Huntington National Bank's operations in six states.

Gilbane served as construction manager for the Chase Manhattan Mortgage Corporation's regional headquarters and operations center. This fast-track project included two separate projects: a new 240,000-square-foot operations center and a tenant fit-out of a three-story office building.

The regional headquarters and operations center sits among 58 acres in the Easton development's high profile, suburban office park.

Gilbane provided construction management services to Limited Brands, one of the nation's fastest-growing specialty apparel stores and mail-order retailers.  The massive scope of this project included the construction of two, 950,000-square-foot buildings on a 360-acre site. The complex houses automated catalogue distribution facilities, offices, and cafeterias.

Not only was this challenging project completed on an accelerated schedule, Gilbane was able to save Limited Brands over $1 million through successful value engineering efforts.

Gilbane completed the construction of a new, three-story laboratory on Battelle Memorial Institute's Columbus, Ohio headquarters and campus. The 135,000-square-foot laboratory and office building houses scientists, engineers, and support specialists working in biotechnology and chemistry.   Project also included 87,000 square feet of renovations to Building 7 on the Battelle campus.

Among the project's special features are an extensive glass exterior to optimize laboratory views, a display atrium, courtyard and plaza areas, a connector to existing buildings, interstitial mechanical/electrical spaces above all laboratory areas, modifications and connections to the central plant, tunnels, utilities, and site improvements.

To meet the growing needs at Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), Gilbane performed construction management services for a new data center adjacent to CAS's existing buildings.

Building C is a two-story data center totaling 46,450-square-feet. Project elements included: select demolition of existing office space, construction of telecommunication closets, and installation of new telecommunications cabling.

Design/build services were provided for a new, $94 million parking garage and terminal expansion at the Port Columbus International Airport. A new, six-level, 1.3 million-square-foot, 4,600-car parking garage was constructed and extensive renovations were performed to the arrival/departure lanes. Other features include a new, 48,000-square-foot atrium within exisitng airport terminal, a three-phase connecting tunnel under 12 lanes of traffic for pedestrians, and moving walkways connecting the garage to the terminal.

Gilbane provided construction management services for a new, 80,000-square-foot hangar and 70,000-square-foot operations center for Executive Jet. The hangar is equipped with the capacity to house 11 jets at individual work stations and nine additional jets in storage. Included in the hangar are maintenance shops, parts storage, avionics, paint shop, and the state's largest Aqueous Film Forming Foam system--a deluge sprinkler system.

The two-story operations center, enclosed in glass curtainwall, concrete masonry, and metal siding, is attached to the hangar by a three-hour fire separation wall. Site work on this project included an FAA-approved 180,000-square-foot aircraft apron and a 500-car surface parking lot.
