Nassau University Medical Center is undergoing a major renovation of multiple departments. Gilbane is providing preconstruction /design phase services, bidding phase services, construction phase services and close-out phase services for multiple separate projects valued at approximately $100 million in construction cost. The above include the Adult In-Patient Psychiatric Unit renovation, the Breast Imaging renovation, the Burn Center, the Chemical Dependency Rehabilitation Unit, the  Adult Psychiatric Unit, the Department of Emergency Medicine/Imaging expansion, infrastructure upgrades, and an outpatient off-site community health clinic.

To ensure the completion of the multiple projects is on schedule, the project team is assisting the Owner with purchasing and vendor coordination for Owner equipment and assisting with State and County approval process (permits). Gilbane also led the architect/engineer selection process on behalf of the owner.  The project team currently handles the coordination of the five different architectural firms retained by the owner through weekly meetings with the Owner and Architects. In addition, Gilbane runs a minority and woman- owned business outreach program on this project and is involved in the master planning of the facility.

Dormitory Authority State of New York
Lehman College New Science Building, Bronx, NY

The Dormitory Authority State of New York (DASNY) chose Gilbane to provide preconstruction and construction phase services for a new 55,000-square-foot science facility on the Lehman College campus in Brooklyn, NY. 

DASNY and CUNY retained the New York office of Perkins + Will to provide the architectural design of the facility. The new facility is being constructed in two phases. The first phase is approximately 55,000 gross square feet with a current construction budget of $38 million. The second phase will be approximately 93,000 gross square feet. The project is in the preconstruction phase with the start of the construction for Phase I scheduled for November 2007.  The project will be the premier plant science facility for the CUNY system.

New York City School Construction Authority

Program Management

Gilbane provides project management professionals to SCA on school construction projects throughout New York City.  The Gilbane personnel, who are individually interviewed and approved by SCA, function as an extension of the SCA staff to oversee and manage capital projects. At present, Gilbane has approximately 25 people assigned to projects, which include new construction, renovations and expansions throughout the city.

Along with the project management tasks, as a part of the overall staff, Gilbane is providing the SCA with estimating staff who work directly in the change order unit, preparing estimates, reviewing proposals, and negotiating changes with contractors. As an extension of services, Gilbane is providing in-house staff to prepare “Order of Magnitude Estimating” (OME) for design and field changes, which are used to facilitate field work while final change order negotiations proceed.

As a further extension of the Gilbane core services under this contract, we are also providing SCA training of in-house personnel through Gilbane University (GU).  Founded in 2000, GU offers a wide range of education experiences and resources for Gilbane employees, Clients, and Trade Contractors.  Gilbane “trainers” are currently preparing to conduct an initial class in safety for the SCA.

Department of Energey - Brookhaven National Labs

Gilbane is providing pre-construction phase services for an approximately $200 million conventional build-out of a National Synchrotron Light Source, (NSLS), II project. This project for Brookhaven National Labs, part of the Department of Energy, will be a state-of-the-art facility, which when completed, will take energy research to a new frontier.
