Fox Network Center - Houston is a 191,640 square-foot campus-style facility, located on 29 acres in The Woodlands, Texas, and includes a central plant and significant antenna farm. This two-story, broadcast distribution facility includes components for network operations, network broadcast, training, and provisions for a future Tier 4 data center. This facility serves as a master control center for Fox’s many regional sports networks and other programming services, including international programming. Furthermore, this facility is the largest master control center in the country.
The facility was designed to withstand at minimum of a Category Two Hurricane (110 mph winds). The structure is steel and pre-cast concrete, cast on site, and includes composite metal panels for additional architectural enhancement.

The project also includes a 10-story parking garage, which will accommodate 1,628 parking spaces and will be connected to the tower via sky bridge. Unique to this project will be 10 wind turbines at the top of the structure that will harvest wind energy to generate electricity. The Southside entry plaza has been designed to compliment the recently completed Discovery Green downtown park. The Hess Tower project was designed by Gensler Architects to achieve the LEED® Gold Certification (Core / Shell), and is currently pre-certified at the Gold Level by USGBC.

El Paso Corporation and Owner Representative, Hines, selected the Gilbane team for the complete renovation of El Paso Corporation’s 32-story Headquarters in downtown Houston. The renovation of this 45- year-old high rise office building includes the complete restacking of all departments, functions and employee areas.
Each of the floors being renovated includes asbestos abatement. A new 20,000 square-foot data center, which supports thousands of square miles of offshore refineries, is included in the project scope. The renovation also consists of new flooring and ceilings, new MEP systems, equipment, and fixtures. Each floor will have a “Town Center” lounge area boasting luxury amenities for use by El Paso employees. The project is targeting LEED certification.

Located on 75 acres in The Woodlands, Texas, this new structure consists of a new 363,000-square-foot, six-story office building and a 87,000-square-foot, two-story warehouse building. The owner, Hewitt Associates, planned to augment its current staff of 550 by 1,000 employees. The heavily wooded site is located on Lake Woodlands, which involved a major landscaping plan to incorporate the lake into the buildings and site. All of the parking on site is in surface lots within major areas of existing trees.
The office building is a steel structure with a facade of architectural pre-cast and ribbon windows. The warehouse building is a tilt-up construction with punched windows and houses the central plant for all building HVAC systems. The site includes major electrical/communication/data ductbanks to service the site and link the buildings together. There are provisions taken in all site systems to allow future buildings to tie-in to existing systems.

The Multipurpose Library building will be four stories comprising 189,000 square feet and a 17,000-square-foot Central Plant. The building is envisioned as a multi-story structure providing student services, offices, and classroom space. The Central Plant, designed to be expanded, will be the first component of a campus utility infrastructure loop.

This project consists of two 326-bed residential colleges. Each college is approximately 115,000 square feet and contains single rooms with community bathrooms, double rooms with a shared bath, suite with four to six enhanced single rooms with separate shared bathrooms for the suite, RA and enhanced RA apartments. Public spaces include lobby/gathering, lounges/studies, laundry, community kitchen, classrooms, and computer room. game room, TV lounge, multi-use space and music practice. Each college has a separate dining/commons area and associated with each college is a separate master’s house residence.
The two colleges are served by a single kitchen of approximately 33,000 square feet, which also contains separate library and private dining rooms for each college. This project is LEED® Certified. Duncan College will be the first LEED Gold-certified project on the Rice University campus. The college will have a green roof, which holds soil and protects plant life and is designed to hold 324 students. The college is being built simultaneously with McMurtry College and, upon completion in the fall of 2009, will be one of the most energy-efficient buildings in Houston.

Gilbane Building Company is serving as the General Contractor for North East Independent School District’s newest high school. This 420,000-square-foot, 116-acre campus will enable the school to accommodate approximately 3,000 students. This is the single largest construction effort ever undertaken by the district.
In keeping with the school’s philosophy to “challenge and encourage each student,” the campus will consist of specialized areas to achieve academic excellence and develop the student’s technical skills. The campus is made up of three separate building for Academics, Athletics and ROTC.
Academic/Laboratory Building: The main building houses all of the general learning areas as well as all science and laboratory facilities. Also included in the main building are all Art, Band, Orchestra, Specialty Classrooms and Food Service areas. The main building also includes a 775-seat Performing Arts Center with adjacent theater support areas, including a Black box theater and classrooms.
Athletic Building: The comprehensive campus will also have an athletic facility and athletic fields including football, soccer, softball, baseball, six tennis courts, 8-lane running track, and a practice field. The Athletic Building includes all gymnasiums, locker rooms, dance team facilities and coaches areas.
ROTC Building: This separate building includes facilities for ROTC programs including classrooms, a rifle range and locker rooms.

This one-of-a-kind design was modeled after a wilderness lodge to blend into the surrounding piney woods and accommodates 2,500 students. Although some of the amenities are typical of most high schools, there are several unique aspects, such as the absence of lockers. This is a new trend in schools that are moving more toward online text books and homework.
The new facility features typical academic classroom areas and science laboratories plus specialty areas such as fine arts, vocational, and athletic. The performing and visual arts component of the project caters to the drama/dance, music, ensemble and arts departments.

The project will also provide alteration, remodeling and repair of existing ISR facilities to accommodate the requirements of the BHT. The building will be able to accommodate a workforce of 264 persons. The research center will integrate all Defense Department combat casualty care research missions and functions in a multi-service, synergistic research facility with a clinic foundation.

This 21,175 square-foot Design-Build project is an open-plan replacement library located at 2510 Willowick. The new library is double the size of the former facility and includes designed areas for all ages and interests with an expanded book collection and several computer stations. The second floor offers a variety of meeting spaces with a pre-function open area that includes a 120-seat multi-purpose community meeting room and a private conference room with seating for 14. In addition, The Garden Archive Room, a glass-enclosed intimate meeting space for round table meetings, includes a display of archival collections, along with the library’s materials on gardening and significant landscape history in the Houston area.
The state-of-the-art, two-story structure is instantly recognizable by its spectacular arched windows, prominent clock tower, and a combination of brick color with the light cast stone. Heralded for its environmentally responsible design, the new building incorporates a wide range of sustainable and durable products and will be the first City of Houston LEED-certified facility.

Gilbane served as Construction Manager for this new waterpark located at 2026 Lockheed Street, which was built on a 26-acre site adjacent to Moody Gardens and the Lone Star Flight Museum. Specialty rivers, water rides, including the Flowrider and Master Blasters, and separate indoor and outdoor areas are just a few of the features of this innovative water park.
The indoor areas, which remain open almost all winter, are connected by walkways and covered with a tent-like structure and boast theatrical lighting in various areas. This section of the park includes the Tidal Wave River, main building, beach area, tube and speed slides, a hot tub, a heated pool with swim up bar, two kiddie pools with slides and waterdrops, a teen slide, a sandbox working model of the park and water play area for small children.

Phase I of this project includes the Houston Zoo’s redevelopment of 6.5 acres to create a dynamic and interactive exhibit of animals common to the African tropical forest. This project consists of a significant amount of site work as a component of its transformation. In addition to the unique and vast amount of rockwork and interpretive theming, it will include a Chimp House, Rhino Barn, Giraffe Barn, Restaurant, Gift Shop and Ticket Booth. Upon completion of this project, the Houston Zoo’s goal is to have a destination attraction that features chimpanzees, giraffes, rhinos and various other African animals in an experiential exhibit that excites, educates, inspires and entertains the Zoo guests. This new exhibit will enrich the life of the animals in the Zoo’s collection, while being successfully operational and instilling a sense of pride, motivation and engagement by the Zoo staff and the community. The architect of record is PJA Architects of Seattle, Washington.

This facility is the City’s first aquatic center geared toward children from low to moderate income families. Located just blocks away from Reliant Stadium, the Harris County Aquatic Center includes a new 22,350-square-foot, single-story natatorium, complete with locker room facilities and bleachers for spectators. In addition to the building, the work included construction of a new 80-space concrete pavement parking lot and demolition and replacement of an existing 80-space parking lot, along with landscaping and irrigation of the surrounding area.

The new 900,000-square-foot, six-level garage has parking for 2,500 cars. The project also involved a 150,000-square-foot baggage area for Terminal C with connection bridges and moving walkways that required road and site utility work. It features connecting pedestrian walkways that link the ticket lobby as well as the inteterminal train. Roadway and surface parking modifications were also performed. To reduce traffic bottlenecks, major portions of the concrete work were done at night.

The terminal includes 12 gates, 39 ticket counters, a 70,000-square-foot pedestrian tunnel and moving walkway system.
